Overview
Telehandlers are selected mainly by lift height, forward reach, lift capacity and attachment requirements. Unlike a front end loader, a telehandler is often chosen for placing materials at height or reaching over obstacles.
The correct machine depends on the heaviest load, maximum height, reach distance, ground conditions and whether the site needs forks, bucket, jib or man basket compatibility.
Telehandler selection factors
- Know the maximum load weight, not just pallet size.
- Check the required height and forward reach at that load.
- Review ground conditions and stabiliser requirements.
- Confirm attachment requirements before hire.
When not to use a telehandler
- For high-volume stockpile loading, use a front end loader.
- For excavation and trenching, use a TLB or excavator.
- For heavy crane lifting, use a suitable crane rather than overloading a telehandler.

FAQs
How do I know which machine size to hire?
Start with the project type, material, access conditions and required output. If production is important, the machine should be matched to the supporting fleet rather than selected in isolation.
Can Project Plant Hire help choose the right equipment?
Yes. Send your site details, hours, location and application, and we can recommend suitable hire options and supporting machines.
Should I choose wet hire or dry hire?
Wet hire is usually better when experienced operators are required or productivity matters. Dry hire may suit clients with their own trained operators and site management.
